There is progress

Jul. 10, 2019 | 09:57 AM Ibrahim meets grand mufti, says there is 'progress'
BEIRUT: The head of General Security Wednesday met with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian in the latest effort to cool tensions after the Aley clashes. The state-run National News Agency quoted General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim as saying there had been progress as he left Dar al-Fatwa at around 9:30 a.m., though he did
not give details. Ibrahim has been appointed mediator of attempts to contain the fallout of a deadly shootout in the Aley town of Qabr Shmoun on June 30. He has met with a number of political and religious leaders, including Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Joumblatt and the head of the rival Druze Lebanese Democratic Party Talal Arslan. The fighting was reportedly triggered by a planned visit to the area by Free Patriotic Movement head Gebran Bassil to the area, which the PSP opposed. Who fired the first shot remains unclear. dailystar
