Erdogan is playing for high stakes. Putin, too, must be calculating the costs of his "success" in Syria, which are growing year on year, in a land in which reconstruction is decades away. Russian military force in Syria only worked when there was no real opposing military force that could shoot its jets down. Now there is. Much hinges on this contest. Chiusa (?) la trattativa con i talebani, il Qatar continua a giocare nel ruolo di emissario-messaggero degli Stati Uniti in regione. Il che fornisce un'idea del tipo d'impegno che Trump vuole assumere in medio-oriente e anche nel mediterraneo. Dopo l'addio del povero Salamè, è difficile aspettarsi grossi cambiamenti o evoluzioni sulla via della cosiddetta soluzione politica.

L'atteggiamento aggressivo tenuto sul campo negli ultimi giorni, non aveva lo scopo di mettere Putin all'angolo. Nessuno si può permettere una mossa del genere.
Ma di farlo riflettere sull'opportunità di lavorare ad un fronte alternativo che porterebbe diversi vantaggi per Erdogan.
Spingere nell'angolo Assad, consentirebbe alla Turchia (anche al Qatar) una posizione migliore rispetto alle monarchie del Golfo. E una striscia di protezione dal pericolo YPG/PKK.
In questi giorni di scintille si è vista la differenza tra l'esercito turco e i gruppi di jihadisti/ribelli che lo affiancavano. Un salto di qualità nell'addestramento e assemblamento di questi ultimi rafforzerebbe quella striscia di protezione.
A quel punto l'opposizione turca non avrebbe molti argomenti.
Un divorzio da Putin, o anche una guerra, non conviene alla fine a nessuno.
Nemmeno a Trump.
