Una stella per la vita e per la morte

"Now we have a suicide star on the wall. That's not what the wall is for. Suicide is a great tragedy, of course. But the purpose of the wall is not to show compassion to the family. Inclusion on the Memorial Wall is awarded posthumously to employees who lose their lives while serving their country in the field of intelligence. Death may occur in the foreign field or in the United States. Death must be of an inspirational or heroic character while in the performance of duty; or as the result of an act of terrorism while in the performance of duty; or as an act of premeditated violence targeted against an employee, motivated solely by that employee's Agency affiliation; or in the performance of duty while serving in areas of hostilities or other exceptionally hazardous conditions where the death is a direct result of such hostilities or hazards.

Dai pochi dettagli disponibili sulla sua vita, viene da chiedersi se siano stati messi a disposizione di Rania Abdelsayed tutti i mezzi necessari alla tutela psicofisica di chi è impiegato in missioni di un certo tipo.
E' stato riferito che forse si era troppo immersa nello scenario afghano.
La CIA e il governo americano sono responsabili della scelta di un profilo adatto e devono comunque fornire un sostegno psicologico in grado di coprire qualsiasi tipo di criticità.
Se il suicidio in questo caso specifico è da considerare un "semplice" atto di debolezza, allora le responsabilità devono essere condivise.
Ma sul significato di eroismo, in tempi in cui il terrorismo è anche o soprattutto un messaggio forte da trasmettere, forse è diventata obsoleta la concezione  dell'eroe che muore in seguito ad un atto predeterminato da un ente che lo considera obiettivo da eliminare fisicamente.
Il gesto del suicidio nel caso di Rania può essere anche la naturale conseguenza di un'azione sistematica orientata a sconvolgere le nostre vite. L'intero arco di vita di un agente segreto al servizio della nazione, e dei valori sui quali essa è costruita, deve essere fonte d'ispirazione.
Il suicidio, nel contesto del vissuto di Rania Abdelsayed, può essere considerato parte della missione poi terminata tragicamente.

Sia Brennan che ha assegnato questa stella, che Tenet che ha premiato altri casi controversi, hanno tenuto conto del contesto in cui sono maturate queste morti tragiche e del profilo dei protagonisti.
Un direttore di agenzia ha la responsabilità di valutare con attenzione se la comunità d'intelligence ha maturato a sufficienza cultura e sensibilità tali da comprendere e recepire positivamente simili attribuzioni.
Allo stesso modo in cui altri fattori (etnia e religione, diverso bacino di reclutamento, anzianità di servizio) possono generare sentimenti di competizione o perdita di motivazioni che sfociano anche in diatribe interne, questo tributo al "suicidio eroico" può creare fratture insanabili e dannose per il buon andamento delle normali attività d'intelligence.
