I soggetti appartenenti a queste categorie, spesso esaltati dai media che li usano in parte come riempitivo ma anche per rendere poetica la lotta contro il terrorismo riducendola all'eterno conflitto tra bene e male, hanno la stessa struttura mentale e attitudine delle reclute di Daesh.  Non a caso la retorica che usano è molto simile a quella della formazione terroristica e affonda le proprie radici in ideologie oscurantiste.

Tutti hanno una spiccata propensione all'isolamento, anche se combattono in piccoli eserciti in loco, e sognano di lasciare una propria impronta nella storia. Spesso sconfinano in un orientamento anti-stato  che può fare danni esattamente come quello vissuto dai foreign fighters di ritorno.
