He expressed confidence that “five years of struggle and perseverance confirmed the right of the people to independently determine their own destiny.” Surkov wished the citizens of the Republic peace and happiness and assured them of unconditional support from Russia. Republic Day in the DPR is celebrated annually on May 11. Five years ago, a referendum on self-determination of the region was held in the cities and districts of the former Donetsk region, in which three quarters of the population took part. The participants of the plebiscite were asked to answer the question: “Do you support the act of state independence of the Donetsk People's Republic?” Almost 90 percent spoke for the sovereignty of Donbass.
