While ISIS has been battered by the Syrian Democratic Forces and coalition forces, we should be clear in our understanding that what we are seeing now is not the surrender of ISIS as an organization but a calculated decision to preserve the safety of their families and preservation of their capabilities by taking their chances in camps for internally displaced persons, and going to ground in remote areas and waiting for the right time for a resurgence.

It has happened to me before that a clip of four words or even a full sentence gets put on television and it doesn't convey the full sense of what I was trying to say. The president has been I think as clear as clear can be when he talks about the defeat of the ISIS territorial caliphate. He has never said that the elimination of the territorial caliphate means the end of ISIS in total. We know that's not the case. We know right now that there are ISIS fighters scattered still around Syria and Iraq, and that ISIS itself is growing in other parts of the world. The ISIS threat will remain.

Ma possibile che non ci sia un addetto dello staff che gli abbia fatto un resoconto o l'highlight dell'audizione nella rassegna stampa del mattino dopo ?

Joseph Votel è un grande comandante. Una persona di enorme dignità soprattutto.
Un soldato di quelli che usa il cervello e l'intuito nella giusta misura.
Quando ci fu la strage al matrimonio yemenita, comprese immediatamente la gravità della situazione. Quanto quella vicenda avrebbe potuto compromettere la situazione sul campo.
Non solo i rapporti tra militari e intelligence. Ma anche con la popolazione.
Lui che ha sempre costruito i suoi successi attraverso reti di collaborazione, diede subito spazio alle indagini e alla trasparenza. Il dialogo è da sempre il suo punto di forza.
Votel ha anche saputo in maniera lungimirante scalare le vette grazie ai buoni rapporti con la politica.
Ma non ha mai compromesso la propria integrità.
Vederlo come tutti gli altri ridotto all'angolo a spiegare scenari ormai ampiamente conosciuti e a elemosinare dietro le quinte aiuti militari dagli alleati per fare in modo che la Siria non vada a fondo, è segno dei tempi.
