Il legame che si stabilisce tra organizzazione e spia deve consistere in un rapporto di dipendenza, al quale la fonte va più o meno consapevolmente a consegnarsi grazie a una sapiente azione di sfruttamento delle sue vulnerabilità (avidità, rancori personali, ambizioni frustrate, egocentrismo o, al contrario, ideali, ansia di libertà, odio per la tirannia ) da parte del reclutatore. Un'azione magari celata da un rapporto interpersonale assolutamente amicale ed empatico, coltivato nel tempo assecondando abilmente esigenze e richieste della persona che deve essere reclutata.

L'impressione che si ricava dai pochi dettagli emersi dalla vicenda che ha visto impegnati MI5 e BBC in una disputa legale, è che qualcosa sia andato storto nell'asse agent-handler-controller. Cioè nella gestione complessiva del rapporto con il soggetto che è stato in seguito accusato di violenze.

I comportamenti della fonte, per il momento accertati attraverso registrazioni/resoconti raccolti dal giornalista e non da magistrati/investigatori in ambiente protetto con l'assistenza di uno psicologo, sono tipici delle truffe seriali messe in atto da persone che millantano appartenenza o conoscenza con ambienti vicini all'intelligence. Solitamente il truffatore utilizza la finta copertura per chiedere soldi ad una o più donne con le quali ha instaurato una relazione affettiva.

Una fonte di alto livello viene periodicamente sottoposta a scrutinio ed elaborazione di profili di rischio. Posto che si tratta di soggetti vicini/addentro ad ambienti criminali o sede di attività terroristiche, è lecito aspettarsi che non si tratti esattamente di bravi ragazzi. Nemmeno è pensabile però, che nell'equazione rischio/beneficio si lasci troppo spazio al rischio in nome della sicurezza nazionale. 

In questo caso specifico la criticità sembra essere sorta da un rapporto di dipendenza deficitario.

Le ragioni di BBC sono di natura prettamente giornalistica. E' difficile prevedere con certezza che l'esposizione dell'identità della fonte possa nell'immediato proteggere potenziali vittime e fare in modo che questo tipo di situazioni non si ripetano. Il polverone mediatico offuscherebbe l'obiettivo.

Il governo inglese, nel pieno rispetto delle norme che garantiscono i diritti della fonte, deve fare chiarezza sul caso.
