Friends remembered her asking them: 'To whom should a wife's allegiance belong — her country or her husband?' ...There was even sympathy among his colleagues for what poor Philby was having to endure from her. ...She, though, increasingly blamed him for her illness. Oltre a possedere una personalità complessa, Philby cercava di convivere a modo suo con il problema che gli agenti segreti devono prima o poi affrontare. Crearsi una dimensione privata e familiare cercando d'integrarla con la vita lavorativa.

Il carattere estremo e violento con il quale interpretava il ruolo di spia lo portava ad assumere lo stesso atteggiamento nella vita privata. La frasetta che lo rese celebre, sul concetto di appartenenza che lui non sentiva proprio, era indicativa dell'idea che aveva dell'amore. 

Non riusciva a concepire che appartenere ad un Paese, o ad una donna e a una famiglia, non significa perdere una parte di se stessi. 

Con Eleanor aveva superato questa barriera. Nel passaggio dalla relazione illecita maturata assieme all'amicizia con il marito, alla formazione di una famiglia vera e propria, si era sentito realizzato. 

Non aveva più bisogno di trattare le donne come oggetti. Per questo motivo l'aveva voluta a Mosca. Forse nemmeno l'amava. Ma aveva bisogno della sua presenza in quella che si presentava come una nuova sfida. Fortemente voluta e non semplice da affrontare. 

Con Eleanor i suoi mondi avevano trovato un punto di contatto e senza traumi.
