The Syrian opposition forces it backs are marbled with extremists and number too few to constitute an effective challenge to Assad or a plausible alternative to the SDF. The areas of Syria that Turkey ostensibly controls, such as Idlib province in the northwest, are increasingly dominated by al-Qaeda. The United States can help Turkey protect its border, but entry of the Turkish military and Turkish-supported opposition fighters into SDF areas of northeast Syria — as is now being discussed — would precipitate chaos and an environment for extremists to thrive.

Now interestingly they came about that name because at one point time, I dealt with them directly. I was, you know, in a former stage of relation with these guys. They formally called themselves the YPG, who the turks would say equated them to the PKK. Who are dealing with terrorists, enemy of mine, how can you do that ally? So we literally played back them. You gotta change your brand. What do you want to call yourself besides the YPG? With about a day's notice they declared they were the Syrian Democratic Forces. I thought it was a stroke of brains to put democracy in there somewhere, but it gave them a little bit of credibility . And the interesting part , and I was lucky I had a great partner in Brett McGurk out there with me at the same time, because they were asking for things I couldn't give them. And literally that was the acknowledgement that they were the demographic dominant force in northern Sirya They wanted to sit at a table, whether it's Geneva or Astana, wherever the talks are happening about the future Syria, and because they had been branded as the PKK they could never get to the table So while we paired with them militarily, McGurk was able to keep them in the conversation and allowed them the necessary legitimacy to be good partners for us. So it was literally something I needed militarily .

L'orientamento tenuto dalla sicurezza nazionale rispetto a tematiche medio-orientali (Siria-Iraq)  nelle relazioni annuali, spesso segue la linea mcgurkiana. In attesa di quella in uscita nelle prossime settimane.

SDF è tra i gruppi, tribù e politici che hanno accettato l'invito di McGurk a sedersi ad un tavolo per discutere obiettivi e contropartita. Ne sono morti tanti come di solito accade in guerra.

Non ci si poteva sedere ad un tavolo con Al Qaeda ai tempi di Calipari.
Oggi lo si può fare perchè non è più Al Qaeda. E Al Qaeda in Siria non è quella raccontata dalle bugie di McGurk che ama organizzare le sue tavolate per mettere l'uno contro l'altro a seconda dei tempi e delle esigenze. Ecco perchè ha fallito dall'Iraq alla Siria.

Hayat Tahrir non è al servizio della Turchia ma ha una sfera d'influenza sui suoi gruppi e su quelli di Al Zawahiri. Se Al Joulani dopo l'era degli incontri di Doha fosse stato accompagnato nel suo percorso di distacco da Al Qaeda, oggi non ci sarebbe nemmeno un problema turco.
L'evoluzione di Nusra avrebbe potuto costituire un modello per i gruppi dall'Africa all'Afghanistan. Al Qaeda sarebbe più isolata e meno pericolosa di quanto lo è oggi.
Ma delle soluzioni poco importa a McGurk.
Lui è bravo a creare problemi che si rigenerano nel tempo.
La Turchia è potenzialmente un partner affidabile.
Bisogna però intendersi sul concetto di affidabilità.
