Le rassicurazioni di Erdogan, a proposito del controllo del territorio che la Turchia può garantire, hanno avuto un ruolo fondamentale per il raggiungimento di un accordo.
D'altro canto però, Putin è stato messo alle strette su due fronti.
Allo stato attuale la Russia ha estremo bisogno della Turchia.
L'enorme carico di armi con il quale ribelli e jihadisti sono stati riforniti nelle ultime settimane e la fortificazione dei punti di osservazione della Turchia nell'area, hanno convinto il presidente russo che Erdogan era fortemente determinato ad andare alla guerra.
Rimane anche la possibilità di un ingresso americano.
